Bone Broth: The Miracle Elixir?

The winter months are upon us, and you may be looking for ways to boost your immune system. Many people turn to bone broth, but is it the “miracle” it is touted to be?

Bone broth is a stock made from the bones and connective tissue of animals or fish. It is said to reduce inflammation and allergies, speed healing, and combat fatigue. Bone broth contains collagen, which is a type of protein that is important for healthy joints, bones and skin. There is, however, no research to show that bone broth confers any special health benefits. If you enjoy bone broth, there is nothing to say that it is unhealthy for you. It just may not be the miracle cure for all of your health ailments.

If bone broth isn’t the magic answer, what should you eat to boost your immunity this winter? It is important to consume a balanced diet that includes plenty of lean protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains. The following nutrients are especially important:

Protein helps to defend your body against illness. Include a variety of protein in your diet from seafood, lean meat, poultry, eggs, beans, dairy, soy, nuts and seeds.

Vitamin A helps to regulate the immune system and protects your body from infections by keeping skin and tissues healthy. You can get Vitamin A in your diet from sweet potatoes, carrots, kale, spinach, red bell peppers, apricots, and eggs.

Vitamin C boosts immunity by stimulating the formation of antibodies, which fight off infections. Be sure to include citrus fruits, red bell pepper, papaya, strawberries, and tomato juice in your diet.

Vitamin E is an antioxidant and helps to improve immune function. Vitamin E is found in sunflower seeds, almonds, vegetable oils, hazelnuts and peanut butter.

Zinc helps the immune system to work properly and is important in wound healing. It can be found in lean meat, poultry, seafood, milk, whole grains, beans, seeds and nuts.
