The holidays are often a time when many of us tend to over indulge. Everything from appetizers to dessert seems to come with extra calories we do not normally have. It may see more obvious to us that we are eating additional calories but what may not seem so obvious is the extra calories we are drinking. While traditional holiday beverages such as eggnog are delicious they are typically packed with extra calories, fat, and sugar. In fact, one cup of eggnog contains about 220 calories, 11 g of fat, and 20 g of sugar without the addition of alcohol! Try these healthier holiday drink recipes below to help keep this holiday season a healthier one.

Eggnoglow-fat-egg-nog-for-christmas
Ingredients:
3 ½ c 1% low-fat milk
½ c fat-free sweetened condensed milk
1 tbsp all-purpose flour
¼ tsp grated whole nutmeg
1/8 tsp salt
2 large egg yolks
¼ c bourbon
2 tbsp brandy
1 tsp vanilla extract
Additional grated whole nutmeg (optional)

Directions:
1. Combine the first 5 ingredients in a medium saucepan. Bring to a boil over medium heat, stirring constantly with a whisk. Place egg yolks in a medium bowl. Gradually whisk one-third of hot milk mixture, stirring with a whisk. Cook over medium heat for 1 minute or until slightly thickened. Pour into a pitcher, stir in bourbon, brandy, and vanilla.
2. Cover surface of eggnog with wax paper; refrigerate at least 4 hours or overnight. Garnish with additional nutmeg, if desired.

Blood Orange Sangriabloodorangesangria-3-2
Ingredients:
2 c sliced strawberries
2 c apple juice
2/3 c triple sec
½ c sugar
4 whole cloves
3 seedless blood oranges, each cut into 16 wedges
2 bottles fruity red wine
2 (3-inch) cinnamon sticks
1 lemon, cut into 8 wedges
1 lime, cut into 8 wedges

Directions:
1. Combine all ingredients in a large pitcher and stir until sugar dissolves. Cover and chill 8 hours or overnight. Discard cloves and cinnamon sticks. Pour sangria into individual glasses, include the fruit.

Peppermint Stick Hot Chocolatepeppermint-hot-chocolate
Ingredients:
8 c 2% reduced-fat milk
¾ c packed dark brown sugar
1/3 c unsweetened cocoa
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/8 tsp ground nutmeg
3 oz semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
12 candy canes
¾ c miniature marshmallows
Whole grated nutmeg (optional)

Directions:
1. Combine milk, brown sugar, cocoa, vanilla, nutmeg, and semisweet chocolate in a large saucepan over medium-low heat. Cook 25 minutes or until chocolate melts and mixture is smooth, stirring occasionally. Serve with candy canes and marshmallows. Garnish with whole grated nutmeg, if desired.
